5. The challenge to be solved

Participants in the EP PerMed Hackathon are invited to take on a critical challenge in the field of personalized medicine: the creation and implementation of novel non-invasive biomarker-based personalized healthcare techniques and technology.

A biomarker is a biological sign that is used to gauge whether a disease, condition, or treatment is present or progressing.

Non-invasive biomarkers include things like chemicals found in your blood, breath, urine, or saliva, data from wearables or mobile health apps, and voice recognition information.

Teams are urged to investigate novel approaches using non-invasive biomarkers to address important areas such (but not limited to):

  • Monitoring disease progression: enabling timely and precise tracking of patient health.

  • Diagnostics and companion diagnostics: improving accuracy, accessibility, and patient-specific treatment strategies.

  • Early estimation of treatment efficacy and toxicity: supporting safer, more effective personalised therapies.

  • Patient stratification: identifying subgroups for tailored interventions and optimised outcomes
